8.1 City Start-Up

Three important objectives of the project had to be addressed now that the physical walls and its gates were completed. They were the “soft side” of the project. These were to:

1) create the environment for the repopulation of the Jerusalem and restoration of its glory;

2) dedicate the project to God, and

3) bring glory to God and see the power of God’s presence among the people in Jerusalem.

Fulfilling these objectives were foremost for Nehemiah and Ezra, and they took the necessary steps to implement the plan to assure successful start-up of the city of Jerusalem. The following actions were taken:

Gatekeepers, singers and Levites were appointed;

Nehemiah put his brother Hanani in charge of Jerusalem;

He appointed Hananiah, commander of the fortress in the temple area, guarding the north wall of the city, which was vulnerable to attack, because he was a faithful man and feared God more than most;

Nehemiah assembled the nobles, the officials and the people to register by genealogy (census);

Gatekeepers were posted at the city gates because of danger and were given specific instructions as to when to open and close the gates;

The gates of Jerusalem were opened only during the business hours of the day, and

Citizens of Jerusalem were placed as guards to monitor the walls and to keep watch nightly.

God always finds faithful men who fear Him and have the courage and conviction to serve Him in tough times. We are reminded that we must protect what we have accomplished for the Lord and be always on guard. We must guard our hearts and minds, keep guards at our gates and be watchers on our walls, for the only ones who can betray us are those that we trust and give access. With the implementation of the start-up plan, the city was now safer from outside attack from its enemies. Nehemiah moved with the momentum to prepare for the returning exiles to repopulate their towns in the fortified city. Citizenship had to be established and the historical records checked and verified. He decided to conduct a census in Judah and Jerusalem.
